The Experience of Birth - How Men and Women Experience ItI really enjoyed and could relate to this article on the life of a doula.

Birth Affirmations are a technique I have seen really work for some moms.

Interesting article about vernix – the creamy substance on baby’s skin – and why it exists.

Great article on Kegels, which have gotten a bit of an undeserved rap the last few years. Kegels DO have a place in preparing for birth, alongside other techniques. I was pleased to see this article address the concept of concious relaxation of the pelvic floor as well, something I’ve long been teaching as a useful skill for birth.

It’s Cesarean Awareness Month, and the Lamaze Blog Science and Sensibility has a fantastic list of resources about cesarean birth, VBAC, and more.

And on that note, this weeks video is on a “woman centered cesarean”:

Weekly Pregnancy and Birth Links.Very interesting research on the myth that women forget the pain of childbirth. Turns out, they don’t. However, if they had a good experience, over time they remember pain as less intense. But with a bad experience, they remember the intensity more consistently.

Which makes it all the more important that women have a good experience. I share Penny Simkin’s article on what makes for a good experience with all my clients. Chances are, it’s not what you think!

Still think 40 weeks is the normal length of a pregnancy? Research study looking at uncomplicated, uninduced length of pregnancy finds that for first time moms, 41 weeks and 1 day is more like it, and for moms who have birthed before, it is 40 weeks plus 3 days. The 40 week estimate is one that has stuck around since the early 1800s, and it’s possible that changes in society, public health, nutrition, etc. have made it possible for women to carry their babies longer, just like the average life expectancy has improved as well.

Lovely story: How A Midwife Changed My Life

And I came across this interesting article on 5 ways to support active duty military moms

Today’s video is from Penny Simkin, one of my very favorite women. She discusses the difference between experiencing pain and suffering. This is an important distinction, especially for those supporting moms.

The Experience of Birth - How Men and Women Experience ItThis article has great tips for anyone attending a birth. Dads, doulas, family and friends should all read it!

A great letter from a normal person to natural birth advocates. Some great things to think about how the natural birth community preaches its message.

Fabulous article discussing the sensations of the pushing stage, what’s happening physiologically, and how to birth without an episiotomy or tear. (Yes, it IS possible!)

Loved this article on 10 Tips for a better labor day.

Nice “crib notes” of labor positions.

Giving solid foods too early can have a long-term impact on baby’s health – and not for the better! Don’t rush it, and don’t start with rice cereal!

Should you have a doula at your home birth? A compilation of opinions.

Doulas are not just for moms! I’ve always believed that it should be thought of as “Dad AND Doula” not “Dad OR Doula”

Web links for birthdaySpecial edition of the Wednesday Wrap Up to celebrate MY OWN BIRTHDAY! (And that’s me in the image on the left, wasn’t I cute?)

Fun fact: The hospital where I was born was the very first hospital in the State of California to earn Baby Friendly status, though not until long after I was born there.

Quentin Tarantino, Mariah Carey, Nathan Fillion, and Fergie all share a birthday with me, but I would really love to share a birthday with one of my doula-babies. I’ve been a doula since 1999, and so far, I am 0 for 15, with no one due soon enough to have hope for today. Maybe next year?

I don’t know much at all about my own birth, only that I was born late afternoon and my mom missed the dinner hour in postpartum. They made her wait to eat until the regular breakfast the next day. Thankfully hospitals are better about that now, and moms can generally get food when they need it.

I do know that when I came home from the hospital, my older brother was bitterly disappointed that I was not a puppy!

If you want to do something for me for my birthday, and you’ve worked with me before, you can leave me a testimonial here.

How cool is it that World Doula Week falls on my birthday every year? If I had realized it in time, I would have planned a party!

In honor of World Doula Week, this week’s video is from the Birth Photography Facebook group, and it features doulas and midwives in action, doing what they do best: supporting birthing moms. I have two images included in the slideshow!

Web links on pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parentingGreat article on the concept of babies learning to self-soothe. And it is not what you think!
Loved this wrap-up of the reasons and risks for the rising cesarean rate. Well documented and honest.
And from another skeptical doctor comes this: Top 10 Signs your Doctor is Planning an Unnecessary Cesarean Section on You
I’ve been saying this for years, nice to hear someone else say it, too! The Big Bad Epidural.
There has been lots of discussion lately about women being forced to have cesareans, after one woman in Florida was threatened with having the police come pick her up for her cesarean! I loved this doctor’s take on the issue.
A little bit of a soapbox issue for me: No More Free Births!
And as I read more from Jodi’s site, I came across this article. I am working with a client who was grappling with some difficult decisions at the time I read it, so it really hit home to me. I have witnessed many women bravely making the choice to take a different path than initially planned when the need arose, even when it disappointed and worried them.
Here is the most amazing, gentle bath of a newborn, for your viewing pleasure:

Wrap-up of current web linksLoved this article: 6 things your doula wants you to know
And after I read that one, from the same site: 5 Things Your Childbirth Educator Wants You to Know
Makes me think I should write my own list of top ten things….hmmmmmm…..wheels turning!
Another great article about respect and autonomy in birth. “Get Over Yourselves!”
I absolutely loved this article on judgement and birth. Her summary “There is no correct way to birth, or to behave during birth. As women and mothers we are subjected to more than enough judgement from others and ourselves. Perhaps it is time to start nurturing and supporting ourselves and others instead.”
Along a similar line, what does – or does not – give a woman “bragging rights” about her birth?
Lovely article on the “Myth of the Perfect Mother”
What does a doula really do? Great photos of doulas in action!
And since it’s just plain funny….yet makes a good point: labor beds should have an eject button.

Great video – 7 women talking about their 7 different birth experiences:

While I take notes at the births I attend, and transcribe them for new parents, I always encourage both parents to journal their birth story themselves. What I write will be interesting to the baby as she grows, but what the parents write will be far more meaningful. I loved this article about why parents should write birth stories.
I have always felt that having a doula at a birth can really take pressure off the dad/partner, and reduce the stress so he can be MORE involved and MORE emotionally there than if he was sole support. In fact, some of the most hesitant dads have turned into some of my biggest fans! I loved this article detailing why dads can benefit from a doula.
An excellent article with some practical tips for moms who are survivors of sexual abuse as they plan for their birth.
While I didn’t win, I still think you should check out the winners of the 2012 International Association of Professional Birth Photographers contest. There’s some good stuff there!
And finally, a short video demonstrating the “Moaning Method” for birth. It can be hard for those who have never used it to understand, but making noise, particularly low-toned moans, can provide a lot of relief in labor.

I hear it all the time when home birth comes up: “If I were at home, I would have DIED.” But you can’t really say that, as there are too many factors that might have been different. Here’s a well written response to that way of thinking.
Along the same line as trying to understand differing viewpoints, a very thought provoking post here, on finding your limits as far as how much you can truly accept of other ways of thinking. Every birth professional should carefully consider these questions, and if you find yourself arguing over birth choices – consider them again.
I really enjoyed reading this article about an OB in Portland, Oregon who really went out of his way to respect and accomodate those who think differently than he did. Moms and babies are definitely the winners as a result!
If you’re thinking about hiring a midwife, but don’t know what to ask in an interview, here is a list of 44 questions to ask. 37 are questions for the midwife, the rest are questions to ask yourself after the interview as part of the decision making process. You don’t have to ask them all – but it will get your brain thinking.
Found this sweet lullaby called, “Sleep Eye” by Elizabeth Mitchell. It’s from the album, “Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie,”. It’s available for purchase from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, or from her website, www.youaremyflower.org. A little more upbeat than your typical lullaby, but I like it!

Wednesday Wrap-up, Valentine’s Edition! 2/13

Four weeks in a row for me! This week, pregnancy and birth Valentine’s Day fun:

Wednesday Wrap-Up GraphicFunny Valentine Notes from a pregnant mom to her partner. From Pregnant Chicken.

Valentine’s Gear for expecting moms and new babies, from Babble

10 Things NOT to buy a pregnant woman for Valentine’s Day, also from Babble

On to non-holiday specific stuff….in the many years I’ve been attending births, I’ve heard some doozies, but I have to agree that these 5 things you should not say to a mom in labor are the most common verbal mistakes I hear!

Interesting discussion of skinny postpartum celebrities and what that means for society from Mama Birth.

And when moms have idealistic ideas about what postpartum will be like, what can re really tell them about the realities of motherhood?

She had me at her opening line: “I cringe when I hear pregnant women say that an essential oil is natural and therefore safe to use during pregnancy.” I’ve always felt that when it comes to herbs, oils, homeopathics, etc. if they are powerful enough to have positive effects on the body, they can also have unwanted effects on the body. She sums it up nicely “they need to be respected for their potency; thoughtful consideration should be used before applying an essential oil to your skin, especially during pregnancy.”

And finally, this amazing video from YouTube, featuring women who have given birth naturally to twins and triplets! Inspiration for moms expecting multiples!

Continuing my tradition of Wednesday links! If you have come across a link you like, please share it in the comments!

Woo Hoo! Three weeks in a row of remembering my Wednesday Wrap-up of interesting articles from across the web:

An interesting pair of articles from Birthing Beautiful Ideas that initially might seem like opposites, but really make the exact same point:

There is an exciting new study out this week on the safety of freestanding birth centers. We have several good birth center options locally and I always love attending births there. For your reading pleasure:

How hospital births are like eating at Olive Garden. An interesting analogy!

I have always loved the oceans and dolphins. When I first started in this birthy thing, I read about dolphins and how the female dolphins surround the laboring dolphin and support and protect her. Seriously considered naming my business “Dolphin Doula” but ultimately decided it was too weird. Turns out I am not the only one, as this week I came across TWO articles where the connection was made: How a Doula is Like a Dolphin and Dolphins and Birth Plans.

Naturally, todays videos had to be dolphin related! This is a song (and also a children’s book) about the birth of a dolphin and the birth of a baby.

Birth by the Numbers

You’ve probably heard lots of different statistics bandied about when people talk about birth. It can be really, really hard to sort throug it all and understand what it really means for birthing women. I’ve had the chance to hear Gene Declercq speak in person, and I really appreciated his ability to make complicated statistics accessible. He’s helped put together a fantastic web site for those who are interested in understanding maternal-child health on a large scale. The video below is fairly long, but well worth the time. So grab a snack, put your feet up, and spend the next 25 minutes learning!

Wednesday Wrap-up 1/30

Yay! Two weeks in a row I’ve remembered to do my weekly web wrap-up!

Wednesday Wrap-Up Graphic

Some reports are saying Shakira was induced, some say a planned cesarean, for the baby being HUGE. Too bad the baby was not big at all, coming in well under the average weight of a newborn. It’s not unusual for weight estimates to be off by as much as two pounds, which is a huge difference. Plus there is no evidence that inducing helps.

A new approach to reducing cesarean sections: requiring hospitals to track and work at reducing rates in order to be accredited. But will it hurt moms who could benefit from cesareans?

Thought provoking article on breastfeeding and culturally induced lactation failure. While I am not a fan of her choice of the word “failure”, I particularly liked the author’s comments about women who cannot breastfeed and how her eyes were opened to be compassionate.

Homemade healthy anti-nausea pops. I’ve never tried, them, but I think I’d try these if I had morning sickness.

A resource list for learning more about all those things that go into birth plans.

Photos showing some lesser-known ways to use the hospital bed to be in positions other than lying down.

Food for thought: I’ve always been skeptical that staging a nurse-in protest did any good. Now others are raising the concern as well.

Something I have always wondered: Can IV fluids in labor effect the baby’s weight?

And finally, a nice collection of doulas in action:
