It’s World Breastfeeding Week!
These 18 comics about breastfeeding made me laugh and remember the good old days when I was nursing my kids.
UNICEF put out a photo essay for World Breastfeeding Week – it’s about a community health worker in Ethiopia who is working to increase the breastfeeding rate in her village.
If you are an employer and would like help making your business more breastfeeding friendly, here are some low cost solutions. Employers who become breastfeeding friendly tend to have “lower health care costs, lower employee absenteeism rates (since babies are healthier), lower turnover rates, and higher employee productivity and loyalty.” Plus, it’s just the right thing to do.

Utah, where I live, has one of the highest rates of initiating breastfeeding. But the numbers drop pretty dramatically – as they do everywhere. Our society needs to do a better job of supporting moms who want to breastfeed and helping them get well established and stick to it.

One way to do this is to have people be more accepting of breastfeeding in public. My friend Leilani is working hard at this with her Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project. She’s collaborating with over 70 photographers doing sessions of moms nursing as they go about their daily lives. At the park, in cafes, at the library, even in the grocery store aisles. There is some beautiful work there and I find it really lovely to see the variety of moms and locations. I know Leilani has worked very hard on the project, and it’s been featured on Huffington Post, Dateline, and many other national outlets.
